Which Windows Server Is Right for Your Small Business?

Now that Microsoft has released Windows Server Foundation, the problem is, which Microsoft server choice is most suited to your small company? Some important decision points you need to think about it.

First and foremost, let's address the Linux issue: Yes, several Linux choices are available. However, I am focused on the Microsoft world, as most of my clients are.

To locate the ideal small company server choice, you'll need the help of a technical expert. Many IT experts are exceptionally gifted. However, your solution supplier must understand how your firm functions, from your line of business emphasis to your culture, financial systems, and communications initiatives. The fact is that many small firms hire the wrong IT advisor, who then proposes ineffective or weak network infrastructure. The proper people lead to the appropriate technology.

With the release of Windows Server Foundation, I believe Microsoft has now provided small companies with a comprehensive and well-rounded product range that satisfies the needs of all organizations today. The following recommendations detail Microsoft's server products and how I feel they may meet your company's needs.

Windows Home Server (WHS) is intended for use in any home and provides a centralized storage solution for letters, spreadsheets, home movies, and family images. These files are simple to share with relatives and friends over the Internet. WHS offers a solution for the safe backup of your home systems to safeguard your most treasured memories. WHS is also suitable for a micro-business that needs a simple storage solution.

Microsoft's newest server option, Windows Foundation Server, allows up to 15 users. Microsoft's Active Directory, Windows Foundation Server, provides a centralized security database that controls files, server resources, and remote access. WFS also offers a remote access solution based on Terminal Services to small businesses. Small businesses may also require a server to run their business apps, such as Quickbooks, Simply Accounting, or other industry-specific software.

The next stage for a developing small firm is Windows Essential Business Server EBS. When your small business reaches a critical mass of 75 people, or if your company's rising demands necessitate the addition of more computing solutions, Windows Essential Business Server is the next logical step. For bigger small businesses or small mid-market corporations with up to 250 workers, EBS offers four different Microsoft Server systems. In addition, management capabilities are provided by Windows Essential Business Server, as are security solutions based on Microsoft ForeFront, messaging via Microsoft Exchange, and data storage via Microsoft SQL Server.

Take the First Important Step There are several server options for your small business. Which option is best for your company is a discussion you must have with your Trusted Business Advisor.
