The objective of this paper is to come up with a possible plan of teaching John individually, given his behavioral patterns. The conclusions and recommendations are derived from three separate observations of John, while he was in the learning environment. The aim of each observation was to collect information on John’s abilities on cognitive, socioemotional, and learning. The information, obtained from the observations, was analyzed using development theories of Jean Piaget, Sigmund Freud, Erik Erikson, and John Blowbly. After the analysis of John’s behaviors, in line with these theories, it was evident that John’s behavioral patterns were totally different from those of his classmates. His behavioral patterns proved that he was exposed to violent environment, thus instilling violent nature, fear and tension in him. Upon completion of this analysis, appropriate research studies were chosen and used to find the best-suited recommendations to improve and enhance the teaching methods and strategies for John.

The observation brought out different behaviors of John that did not exist in other children, making him an exceptional child in the class. His traits hindered him from learning effectively, like other children. John experienced the lack of concentration, anger, violence and withdrawal, which hindered him from making friends and interacting with other children. Certainly, these obstacles prevented John to effectively learn in class, engage in class activities and music, compared to others in class. However, this information is much valuable, since it will help the teachers to make effective preparation for lessons, know how to handle John, when he is angry, and how to prevent John from being violent in class. John needs affection and acceptance, which teacher can give to make sure that she provides to John for effective learning. This information indicates the approaches, which the teacher can use to ensure John calms down, when he is angry and which will waste her time, since it cannot work with John.
The collected information goes an extra mile to help the teacher create conducive environment for John to concentrate and reduce tension and fear (Curtis & Carter, 2015). This information showed that if John is approached politely, he can interact with others and become friends. When Ms. Millicent brings balloons to children, John seems to enjoy playing with it, indicating that in conducive environment, without conflict and violence, he can concentrate and easily interact with others. When one of the balloons burst, he is filled with fear due to the sound a balloon makes and hides under the table, showing that he needs the environment free from violence. Also, when his classmate gave a ball to him, he interacted with him and they even started playing together.
Observation showed that John really enjoys playing with a ball and balloons. It will be important to identify other kinds of games that John likes, besides playing with balls and balloons. Playing can create a good avenue for interaction and overcoming fear and tension, while boosting learning, putting in mind the limited number of activities that John engages himself in.
Considering that John sometimes concentrates and interacts with his classmates, Erikson’s concept of thought and mental development in his second stage can be related to the case; this concept describes children of ages from two to six years, who do not understand the logic and do not easily take a point of view of others (the same is described in Bowlby’s attachment style). These children may seem to have avoidant, disorganized and ambivalent attachment style that develops due to a lack of strong attachment, can be used to explain John’s behavioral traits. Providing enough care and protection to John can go far in helping him to develop strong self-esteem and interactive nature because they develop strong attachment, which is vital in this stage of development. When a boy tries to take the balloon that was initially possessed by John, he becomes angry and pushes him down against the floor, it may have created the impression that he does not fully understand logic and point of view of others (DeViney, 2010). When a teacher tries to cool him down, John unexpectedly picks up his balloon and holds it in his tiny hands and walks out slowly, leaving everyone amazed; it is clear that John has developed defiant attachment style.
John has a strong attachment with balls and balloons and he seems to enjoy playing with them. Teacher can take the advantage of this attraction to balls and balloons to enhance his learning and interaction. Scientists recommend that caregivers should show children in this stage affection, closeness and touching. Studies prove that giving a hug to child that has an emotional problem will help him/her regain control. In addition, young children are calmed down by having an adult move closer to them and showing interest in the activities they are doing, which is proven when John accepts to give his classmates a video game, when an assistant teacher intervenes politely. Another approach that can be used to deal with John is to buy him many balls and balloons, which can make him busy; this will create an environment of happiness and excitement. To know whether this approach works, modification of Diachenko & Berk needs to be tested.
Adequate analysis of the observation indicates that John has no disability, since his development fits Piaget’s Periods of Cognitive Development, as well as Bowlby’s attachment styles of defiant, disorganized and ambivalent. Whether the causes of John’s behavioral patterns are innate or due to a lack of concrete logical manipulation of information, they have both strengths and weaknesses, which need to be clearly understood. His main strengths are the ability to enjoy playing with balloons and balls, when he is excited, while his main weakness is to be violent, lack of concentration, anger and fear due to loud noises. John’s violent nature can be dealt with by showing him affection, acceptance and providing him with balloons and balls that he likes.
