Personal Statement

My college career has been rather unstable considering the fact that at that time I have been studying at three different colleges. I started out in the North China Institute of Science and Technology before coming to the US where I got the opportunity to join the Ohlone College in California. This was 2010 spring term when I learnt the basics of college education in the US. Now I can state confidently that at the present time I am a fully adjusted student with respect to college studying and survival techniques. It was a great opportunity to get a chance to prepare for a life of academic growth in an environment that is not only dynamic but also highly competitive internationally.

After this preparation term, I spent some more time getting introduced to the various subjects that I could learn, among which were: information technology, principles of economics, financial accounting, statistics and sociology. During this period I realized my specified interest in business and economics and decided that it should be my major. I spent about three years choosing between the Ohlone and the De Anza Colleges (both in California), but my studies were rather continuous in terms of the curriculum. It can be seen in my grades that I was fully committed to my education and all the subjects that turned out challenging in terms of performance were actually repeated in a later course and were finished successfully afterwards. Thus, it is my sincere belief that finally I will be able to settle down and complete my bachelor’s degree at the university colleges (UC).

Being an international student was at some point a challenge considering the cultural differences that I have had to deal with. I look like I came from China at that time. Nevertheless, with the help of some learning cultural information, I have been able to live through these challenges and even learnt from my experience. I have spent a better part of my time in the United States trying to adjust to the new environment in terms of language and culture. As an international student, I have always been greatly concerned about fitting in communication; this has pushed me to work harder in terms of voluntary work and school club memberships. I have worked towards improving my position in the US as a Chinese green card holder and I believe my efforts haven’t been in vain considering the fact that now I feel very comfortable in the American society.

The main reason for my transfer request is the need to advance from a community college to a reputable university. Initially, I was an international student with limited prospects of high education. I was also lacking in academic qualification taking into account that I had studied high school in China and would thus have been lagging behind due to language and cultural barriers. My studying time at Ohlone and later De Anza Colleges were preparations for the UC establishments where I intend to excel in my academics for a better future. The school presents all the opportunities needed. I am sure that I will be able to realize my personal academic and career goals with the help and collaboration of the school’s faculty.

My intended major in career goals (mostly in business and economics)would be an entrepreneurship where I expect to start and run a successful business in the future. I have been inspired by a lot of remarkable individuals from business world including Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sean Carter, and other reputable businessmen, not only in the US but also in China, UK, and Africa. At this point, I am well prepared to start my major mainly because I have had two years of preparation at the Ohlone and De Anza Colleges.

As for my cultural understanding, I have to admit that being Chinese is in many instances a challenge to my sojourn in the United States. Fortunately, the concept of globalization had enabled me to learn the basics of the American English language before I came to the US. I also learnt a lot about the American culture. Currently, I am a relatively fluent English speaker and I can attest that I have settled in very well after undergoing a lot of culture competence training and acculturation. My being Chinese has also helped me in understanding and appreciating the American culture along with the great opportunities that come with living in a large and globally respected country. I have also been able to learn that I do not have to be the same in order to fit in to the society. Unlike in China, being different is actually a good thing and even now I intend using this fact to my advantage, including various opportunities associated with diversity.

I have a background and interest in voluntary work where I consider such opportunities as corner stones to gain experience and experiential learning towards my career goals. The UC have an impeccable reputation in academics and research I am particularly attracted to. I want also to practice my skills in real life situations considering my plans to continue volunteering. To this effect, I believe that UC establishments will open up more opportunities for me to volunteer further and gain even more work experience for better career development. Thus, an acceptance will be an honor that I hope to capitalize on hard work and relentless commitment.
