A Microsoft employee appears to have accidentally announced that Windows 11’s Notepad app is getting a tabs feature. The employee, a senior product manager at Microsoft, posted a photo of a version of Notepad with tabs, enthusiastically announcing “Notepad in Windows 11 now has tabs!” with a loudspeaker emoji.

Just like tabs in File Explorer (and most other apps with tabs,) the tabs themselves appear along the top of the app and allow the user to open multiple .txt files in the same window. Assuming the feature is on track to ship at some point, it's likely this new version of Notepad will be announced in the next handful of weeks for Windows Insiders in preview. 

However, the leaked screenshot does not tell us anything about when it will be available for the general public. It is possible that Microsoft will test the new interface in Notepad with Windows 11 Insiders before making it a part of its upcoming "Moment" updates. Maybe the software giant will push it to Insiders early next year.

If Microsoft does proceed with tabs for Notepad, it will be the first built-in app to get a tabbed interface after Microsoft added tabs to File Explorer earlier this year. Microsoft originally tested tabs across all Windows 10 apps four years ago in a feature named Sets. This included support for tabs inside Notepad and File Explorer, but Microsoft eventually canceled the project and never shipped it to Windows 10 users.

Hopefully this means this new Notepad app will roll out officially in the coming months, possibly alongside an upcoming Windows 11 Moment update. The inclusion of tabs in Notepad will be a nice addition for Notepad power users. The question now remains, what app will Microsoft add tabs to next?
